NCC Finland

NCC Finland is part of the EuroCC2 project, which establishes national HPC competence centers in different European countries. NCC Finland's mission is to support and improve the capabilities of Finnish business users to utilize the opportunities of high- performance computing, data analytics and artificial intelligence.Through EuroCC Finland, companies have access to the computing capacity of the EuroHPC LUMI Supercomputer. EuroCC Finland is operated by the CSC – IT Center for Science.

Industrial organisations involved:

Finnish-based IQM is a global leader in superconducting quantum computers. IQM provides both on-premises full-stack quantum computers and a cloud platform for accessing its computers. IQM´s customers include leading high-performance computing centres, research labs, universities, and enterprises, which have full access to IQM’s software and hardware. IQM has over 300 employees with headquarters in Finland and a global presence in France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Poland, Spain, Singapore, South Korea, and the United States.

Technical/scientific Challenge:

Simulation of quantum processing units (QPUs) presents new challenges for finite element simulations due to complex geometries and exotic material models. Computing power and scalability was needed.

CSC has been an active developer of Elmer software based on finite element method. The use of Elmer software led IQM to computing collaboration with CSC.

Solution:

IQM has been able to run complex classical electro-magnetic simulations using Elmer software to optimize QPU components, which has led to significant improvements in the product development. LUMI supercomputer offered the needed computing power and scalability that was needed. Since the results were good and the experience positive, we decided to buy computing time after the trial period,”  says Juha Hassel, VP of Quantum Technologies at IQM.

Business impact:

Using LUMI has brought IQM several benefits, including access to vast computing resources that wouldn’t otherwise be available.

“Additionally, we were able to present our results at the APS Global Physics Summit in the US – one of the largest physics conferences – which helped boost our company image as one of the leaders in the field. For our customers, this means we can provide more advanced and efficient quantum computing solutions,” tells Juha Hassel, VP of Quantum Technologies at IQM.

IQM’s use of LUMI also has the potential to contribute to societal benefits in the long run. More efficient and powerful quantum computing solutions can accelerate breakthroughs in fields such as medicine, materials science, logistics, and climate modeling. This can lead to improvements in healthcare, energy efficiency, and environmental sustainability. In short, LUMI helps accelerate progress in quantum computing.
