The increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events make access to timely, high-resolution information more important than ever. AI-based nowcasting techniques can complement traditional meteorological approaches, helping public administrations, businesses, and research organisations assess risks more rapidly and make informed decisions.

Against this backdrop, EuroCC Italy, in collaboration with IT4LIA AI Factory and Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK), is organising a webinar on the use of weather radar data and artificial intelligence for very short-term precipitation forecasting in Italy.

Webinar: Open Weather Radar Data and AI Nowcasting for Italy

Tuesday, 8 September 2026
Time: 12:00–13:00 CEST
Language: English

The webinar will present two open resources developed to facilitate access to and the operational use of Italian weather data.

  • The IT-DPC-SRI dataset: a publicly accessible archive of precipitation estimates derived from the Italian weather radar network, available from 2010 onwards and continuously updated in real time. This cloud-optimised dataset provides a consistent record of precipitation at a spatial resolution of 1 km and a temporal resolution of 5 minutes.
  • The IRENE artificial intelligence model: a deep-learning model developed for short-term precipitation nowcasting across Italy. Going beyond traditional extrapolation methods, IRENE uses artificial intelligence to predict rapid, short-term changes in precipitation and generate reliable probabilistic forecasts.

The session will be led by Alessandro Camilletti, Researcher at FBK. During the webinar, Francesco Bracci from 3BMeteo will also present a real-world example of how these tools have been integrated into operational workflows, highlighting their practical benefits and applications.

The webinar will serve as an introduction to a subsequent two-day technical Masterclass designed for data scientists and engineers. The Masterclass will provide practical guidance on integrating the IT-DPC-SRI dataset and the IRENE model into existing processes, applications, and infrastructures.

Target Audience

The webinar is intended for professionals, researchers, companies, and representatives of public administrations interested in integrating radar data and advanced weather models into their workflows. Key areas of application include:

  • Public Administration and Civil Protection: high-resolution data and AI-generated forecasts can support early-warning systems, urban hydrology management, and emergency response planning.
  • Business and Industry: precipitation information can be integrated into insurance risk-assessment models, logistics processes, and resource management for agriculture and critical infrastructure.
  • Research and Innovation: the availability of a standardised, analysis-ready dataset provides a valuable foundation for training new data-driven weather models and advancing meteorological and climate research.
