Abstract – HPC Leadership Training Institute (European Edition, 2025)

In 2025, the HPC Leadership Training Institute will come to Europe for the very first time, hosted by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center in collaboration with SURF, the University of Luxembourg, the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC), and Microsoft. This well-established three-day, in-person workshop is designed to support current and future leaders in high-performance computing (HPC) by equipping them with the practical knowledge and strategic insight required to lead effectively in this fast-evolving field.

The HPH Leadership Institute places strong emphasis on networking, and numerous activities are tailored to encourage connections.

Now in its second decade, the Institute covers a comprehensive range of topics including procurement strategy, cost modelling (with a focus on Total Cost of Ownership), risk management, value frameworks, and the wider organisational impact of HPC investment. The training draws upon the extensive experience of its tutors and reflects the lessons learned from hundreds of successful HPC procurements around the world.

Originally launched at SC13 in Denver and developed further through annual events at TACC and Stanford, the programme has become the sector’s leading independent training initiative for HPC leadership. It attracts a diverse and highly engaged international audience, and its alumni now number over a thousand.

The 2025 edition will be led by Andrew Jones (widely known in the community as “hpcnotes”) and will feature contributions from a range of expert speakers. Participants will benefit from a highly interactive environment, real-world case studies, and the opportunity to connect with peers facing similar challenges.

This inaugural European edition marks a significant milestone in the Institute’s history, and represents a unique opportunity for stakeholders across academia, industry, and the public sector to develop the leadership skills required to deliver and sustain world-class HPC services.
