HLRS provides leading high-performance computing resources to academic and industrial users across Germany and Europe. This introductory course helps users get productive on our systems, covering the essentials of working on the HLRS clusters from your first login to submitting and managing batch jobs. It is aimed at HLRS users who are new to working on the clusters; no prior cluster experience is assumed, only basic familiarity with a computer.

Over three mornings, each lecture is followed by a hands-on session that puts it straight into practice on Hunter: connecting via SSH, the Linux command line, file systems and data transfer, software environments, and the PBS batch system. The days are designed to be taken selectively. If you are already comfortable in a Linux shell, you can start on Day 2.

The course is open and free of charge for academic participants from Germany.

You can find more information and registration of the official course webpage: https://www.hlrs.de/training/2026/ish

This course focuses on accessing the systems and running jobs, not on porting or optimizing code, those topics are covered in the separate Porting and Optimization for Hunter hackathon
