CASTIEL 2 coordinates and supports collaboration among the network of National Competence Centres for HPC and the HPC Centres of Excellence, promoting the development of HPC expertise and the adaption of HPC applications across Europe.

Since 2020, the CASTIEL coordination and support action has worked closely with the EuroCC network of National Competence Centres (NCCs) for High-Performance Computing (HPC) to identify and address differences in HPC expertise among the participating countries, and to find synergies that could enhance the development of pan-European HPC competences.

In its second project phase, CASTIEL 2 continues the original project’s mission and work with the National Competence Centre initiative, and additionally coordinates and supports the Centres of Excellence (CoEs) in HPC. Fostering the collaboration and exchange between NCC and CoE activities maximises impact on their respective user communities and the European HPC landscape. To offer the best possible support for developers and users, and facilitate the uptake of these important services and technologies, the project’s main results are now gathered on the HPC in Europe Portal, which acts as central hub of information for anyone interested in European HPC expertise, competences, codes, services, trainings and other related news and materials

Who are the NCCs?

Established under the EuroCC project and continued under EuroCC 2 and EuroCC4SEE, the network of National Competence Centres (NCCs) now includes a total of 33 participating countries across Europe. The NCC network provides expertise and support for users from industry, academia, public administration, and society in the fields of High-Performance Computing (HPC,) High-Performance Data Analytics (HDPA), and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Find out more about the NCCs and their support here: National Competence Centres

Who are the CoEs?

Focused on key HPC user communities, the Centres of Excellence (CoEs) are developing and adapting essential application codes towards advanced performance for exascale and post-exascale computing capabilities. As such, the CoEs cluster European expertise on specific scientific topics such as Engineering, Material Sciences, Biology, Weather and Climate or AI.
